History of the Breed: The Dachshund is a short-legged long bodied scent hound available in three varieties; smooth coat, wire coat, and long coat and each in two different sizes; standard, and miniature. The breed's name is German and means badger dog. These dogs were developed to scent, chase, and hunt badgers, fox, and other hole-dwelling animals. The Dachshund has a low-slung body and the dog has the ability to rest on his chest in a hole and use his remarkable limber front legs to dig his way out of trouble. If he was unable to get out of the hole the hunter would reach into the hole and grab the dog by its long tail and pull him out. This breed is related to the Basset Hound through the St. Hubert Hound and is at least a 300 year old breed.

General Appearance: A small, low to the ground, powerfully built, muscular deep chested, long bodied hound dog. This scent hound breed comes in 6 varieties; smooth coat, wire coat, and long coat in two sizes; standard and miniature. The Dachshund has a head with a slightly arched skull equipped with a slightly-arched muzzle carried with confidents and with intelligent facial expression. The ears are set near the top of the head are rounded and hound like. The body is supported by short slightly crooked legs and completed with a strong pointed tail of moderate length carried horizontally.

Coat: Three varieties of Dachshunds:

Smooth-haired - Short, smooth and shining

Wired-haired - Short, dense, rough, hard, tight fitting outer coat with a finer and somewhat softer shorter haired undercoat. The face hair provides the breed with a beard and bushy eyebrows

Long-haired - sleek, glistening, often slightly wavy hair is longer under the neck and on the fore chest, the underside of the body, the ears, and behind the legs

Color: Color is by variety:

Smooth-haired color - All base colors, however certain patterns and colors are distinguishable and include:

Single color - Red, cream.
Two color - Black, chocolate, wild boar, grey and fawn each with tan markings.
Single dapple - a lighter colored areas contrasting with the darker base color
Double dapple - is one in which varying amounts of white coloring occur over the body in addition to the dapple pattern
Brindle - is a pattern of dark stripes over the entire body is some cases the pattern may be visible only in the tan points.

Wired-haired color - Common colors include wild boar, black and tan, and several shades of red, all colors are acceptable.

Long-haired color - Same as the short-coated

Grooming needs: Ears should be cleaned regularly.

Long coat - Medium, regular brushing to prevent mats from forming

Temperament of Breed: The breed is very clever and courageous.
Friendly with children: Yes, can be very good with children, provided they are socialized when they are puppies.
Friendly with other dogs: Yes, if socialized when the dog is young

Suitability as a watchdog: Excellent

Exercise Level: Medium, should get daily exercise to avoid excess weight gain that can lead to back problems common to the breed.
