Other Name(s):

History of the Breed: Bulldogs were originally working dogs that drove and caught cattle and used to guard their owner’s property. The breed's strength, courage, and familiarity with livestock led to its popularity in the brutal sport of bull baiting prevalent in 17th and 18th century England. Bull-baiting was a popular amusement, in which trained bulldogs attacked a tethered bull. Bull-baiting was outlawed in England in the late 18th century and as a result the large baiting style Bulldog almost disappeared. A shorter, stockier, less athletic dog we know today as the English Bulldog replaced the bull baiting larger dog. The original Bulldog was preserved by immigrants who brought their dogs to America.

General Appearance: Similar to the English Bulldog with longer legs. The America Bulldog is far more athletic than the English Bulldog. The deep chested body is reminiscent of related dogs such as the Boxer and Bull Terrier.
