History of the Breed: The American Eskimo dog descended from one of the varieties of Spitz developed in Germany. When European workers came to America, they brought these dogs with them. The breed was called the American Spitz. After World War I, the breed’s name was changed to the name we know today as the American Eskimo in order to remove any Germanic sound from it.

General Appearance: A compact Spitz type dog. The head has a foxy look with a broad muzzle. The length of the muzzle does not exceed the length of the skull. The stop is well defined. The brown oval eyes are set well apart. The erect ears are triangular in shape and set on high on the head. The nose is either black or brown. The body is strong and compact with a deep and broad chest that extends to the elbow. The back is straight, broad, and muscular. The loin is strong and well-muscled. The Spitz like tail is carried loosely on the back. The dog is covered in a white long coat of dense hair with the tail profusely covered.
