History of the Breed: The breed is thought to have been a mix of the Irish Water Spaniel and the Curly-Coated Retriever. The extinct
English Water Spaniel and other small Spaniels were used to downsize the dog. The AKC recognized the breed in 1940.
The breed was developed as a bird dog and excelled at hunting ducks in lakes and ponds. The eagerness, small size, love for water,
and dark brown coloring made it the ideal water dog. The breed also proved itself to be an adept retriever of small game including rabbits,
pheasants, grouse and quail.
General Appearance: Compact medium sized dog, just a bit smaller than most Retrievers and larger than most Land Spaniels,
the American Water Spaniel is ideally designed to work in an around water. The breed is very active and energetic, once trained it can
stand up to demanding physical activity. Its coat is both water repellent and protective.
