History of the Breed: To reconstruct ranks of military dogs after WW2, Soviets imported working breeds from other countries, mainly from Germany to develop a new breed. The Giant Schnauzer is recognized as the main stock dog with mothers that were Airedale Terriers, Rottweillers, Moscow Water Dogs, Caucasian Ovcharkas, Newfoundlands and German Shepherds.

General Appearance: A large strong dog with massive muscles and bones. The head is large and broad with a well developed occiput and a flat forehead. The oval eyes are dark and medium sized. The small triangle shaped ears are set high. The large nose is black. The body has a deep and wide chest that reaches at least to the elbows. The loin is short with a well tucked up abdomen. The tail is set high thick and docked. The dog is covered in a medium length tousled black coat.

Coat: A double coat, with a dense and soft undercoat and a outercoat that is from one to four inches in length and tousled.

Color: Black with or without a few gray hairs

Grooming needs: High, need grooming at least once a week, more if a show dog

Temperament of Breed: Black Russian Terriers are dominant by nature and need confident owners who have experience handling similar dogs.
Friendly with children: Yes, if socialized, better with older children
Friendly with other dogs: Yes, if socialized stating at an early age

Suitability as a watchdog: Yes, excellent
