History of the Breed: The Boykin Spaniel breed can be credited to the work of L. W. Boykin (1861-1932), a sportsman from South Carolina.
It is thought that Mr. Boykin experimented with several breeds possibly including the Chesapeake Bay retriever, springer spaniel, cocker spaniel,
and the American water spaniel to develop the small multipurpose retriever. L.W. specifically wanted to develop a small rugged retriever for
turkey and waterfowl hunting in and around the Wateree River Swamp in South Carolina.
Today the Boykin is used by sportsman nationwide and they make an ideal family companion.
General Appearance: A compact medium Spaniel, that is very energetic and can stand up to demanding physical activity.
The skull is of medium length, fairly broad, flat on top, and slightly rounded at the sides and back. The muzzle is approximately the same
length as the skull. The width of the muzzle is approximately one half the width of the skull when viewed from the top. The forehead is covered
with smooth, short hair. The flat setting Spaniel ears lie close to the head and are set slightly above the level of the eye line. The ears will reach to
the tip of the nose when pulled forward. The nose is dark liver in color with well-opened broad nostrils. The eyes are dark yellow to brown
in color and are set well apart.
The body is strong and compact with sloping shoulders and a well developed chest. The tail is docked and is 2 to 3 inches in length.
The medium length coat is reddish to chocolate brown and can be flat to moderately curly.

Coat: The coat is flat to moderately curly with medium length, fine hair with light feathering on the legs, feet, ears, chest, and belly.
Color: The color is a solid, reddish brown or dark chocolate and can have a small white spot on the chest only.
Grooming needs: Low, should be brushed weekly
Temperament of Breed: This breed is friendly, energetic, persistent, and obedient. Makes a fine family pet.
