History of the Breed: The Briard has been used since early times as a guardian of the flocks and a herding dog. He has been the official
dog of the French Army in both World Wars carrying supplies to the front lines, as a sentry dog, and used by the Medical Corps to search for
wounded soldiers. The Briard had the unique ability to lead the Corpsmen to wounded soldiers. The Briard has a well-balanced temperament that
makes him an ideal family dog. Bred for centuries as a guard and herding dog, the Briard is naturally aloof with strangers. The name Briard
came to be used in 1989 when people started calling him the chien berger de Brie (shepherd dog of Brie).
General Appearance: The Briard is a large dog with a very unique and handsome sheepdog like coat. He is a powerful and alert breed
exhibiting the strength and agility required of the herding dog.

Color: All uniform colors are permitted except white
Coat: A double coat with the outer coat being coarse, hard and dry and lies down flat falling naturally in long slightly waving locks.
The shoulder hair is generally six inches or more. The undercoat is fine and tight on the body. The head is well covered with hair which lies down
forming a natural part in the center. The eyebrows do not lie flat but arch up and out in a curve that lightly veils the eyes.

Temperament of Breed: The Briard will attempt to herd anything that moves.
Friendly with children: Yes, excellent with children however they do not like to be teased.
Friendly with other dogs: Yes, they should be socialized with other dogs at a young age.
Suitability as a watchdog: Excellent, Briards have extremely sensitive hearing.
