History of the Breed: Named after its country of origin Brussels, Belgium. During the 19th century coachmen kept these small terriers
with them to eliminate rats and vermin in stables. The breed was created by crossing the Affenpinscher with
other toy dogs including the Pug, Spaniels and Terriers. In Europe, this breed is classified into three types, the smooth coated called the
Petit Brabancon, the red colored rough coated variety is called the Brussels Griffon, and the black or black and tan variety is called
the Belgian Griffon. In the United States the three types are treated as a single breed.
General Appearance: A toy compact breed with almost human expression. The head is broad and round with a well-domed forehead.
The ears are very straight and cropped to a point. The muzzle has a distinct upward turn with a full beard and mustache. The very large
round eyes are black. The body is square in build with a deep chest. The tail is docked by one-third and held erect. The dog is covered in
either a medium length dense wiry coat or a short, straight coat.

The rough coat - a double coat. The undercoat is soft and short and the outercoat is wiry, dense and hard and medium in length.
