History of the Breed: Originally thought to be an ancient breed dating to the Aztecs. Evidence today suggests these dogs were
likely brought to Mexico by the Spanish. The Spanish likely obtained this small breed through trade with China. China has a long history
of developing small dogs. The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog known and is named for the Chihuahua region in Mexico.
General Appearance: A well balanced toy dog weighing 6 pounds or less. The body is slightly longer than tall.
An apple shaped head with large, erect type ears, muzzle somewhat short and slightly pointed.
Available in two coat types smooth or long and with any color being acceptable including one solid color or marked, or splashed colors.
Coat: Can be long or smooth. Smooth coat - soft texture, short and glossy with less hair on head and ears.
Long coat - soft texture, either flat or slightly curly, with undercoat preferred.
Color: Any color, solid, marked, or splashed.
Grooming needs: Low
Temperament of Breed: Friendly with children: Yes, however, the dog's size and physical fragility is not a good fit with children.
Friendly with other dogs: Yes, they need socialization and prefer other Chihuahuas.
Suitability as a watchdog: High

Health Issues with the Breed: Care should be taken when walking the dog in cold climates as the dogs mass is so small. Dog clothing
