The industrial revolution created a significant amount of unemployment in this trade. Workers found opportunity in the coastal towns of Normandy, France and brought these dogs with them. This breed became very popular with the French working class in Paris as well as with artists. These dogs became the dandies of "Ladies of the Night" and were quite popular in Paris, often being depicted in brothels by artist of that day. Eventually, the French Bulldog became a favorite with the rich and famous. In addition to France, these dogs were also popular in America, England, and Germany and the breeders in all these countries are responsible for the unique look of the French Bulldog.
