History of the Breed: The German Wirehaired Pointer was developed in Germany in the mid 19th century to fill the need for an all purpose
hunting dog. The breed was developed from Pointers, Foxhounds, Pudelpointers, and Polish water dogs.
General Appearance: A well muscled, medium sized dog of distinctive appearance. The head is moderately long with medium sized oval brown
eyes. The rounded ears hang close to the head. The skull is broad with a medium stop and a long muzzle. The nose is dark brown with open nostrils.
The back is short, straight and strong and the tail is docked two-fifths of its natural length and set high. The coat is somewhat water-repellent
with an undercoat that is dense in the winter and thin in summer. The outer coat is straight, harsh, flat, and wiry and is one to two inches in
length.

Coat: The coat is weather resistant with an undercoat that is dense enough in winter to insulate against the cold but is so thin in
summer as to be almost invisible. The distinctive outer coat is straight, harsh, wiry and flat lying, and is from one to two inches in length.
The outer coat is long enough to protect against the punishment of rough cover. On the lower legs the coat is shorter and between the toes it
is of softer texture. On the skull the coat is naturally short and close fitting. Over the shoulders and around the tail the coat is very dense
and heavy.
Color: Liver and white, usually either liver and white spotted, liver roan, liver and white spotted with ticking and roaning or solid
liver. The head and ears are liver, sometimes with a white blaze.

Temperament of Breed: They are friendly with people they know, but are naturally aloof with strangers and should be socialized at an
early age.
